A Delta Air Lines flight travelling to Atlanta was delayed last week after a dispute over phone use turned into police intervention and an arrest. According to People Magazine, the incident happened as the plane was preparing for departure, triggering growing frustration among passengers and ultimately forcing the flight to return to the gate. Video footage later shared online showed tense moments inside the cabin as travellers urged compliance. Authorities confirmed that a passenger was removed from the aircraft and taken into custody before the flight resumed.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 27, aboard a Delta Air Lines flight 1323 from Miami to Atlanta, while the plane was still at the gate. The passenger was identified as Shannon Marie Harris, 46, of Tyrone, Georgia, according to arrest records cited by People Magazine. Flight attendants reportedly asked Harris multiple times to end her phone call as part of standard pre‑departure safety procedures. Under federal aviation regulations, passengers are required to follow crew instructions, including putting electronic devices in airplane mode before takeoff.

Despite repeated warnings, Harris allegedly refused to hang up her phone. According to the arrest report referenced by People, the situation escalated to the point where the pilot ordered the aircraft to return fully to the gate. Crew members then instructed Harris to leave the plane. When she declined, the decision was made to ask all passengers to deplane, causing further delays and visible frustration inside the cabin.

Tense Scene Captured On Video

Video recorded by passengers and later shared with Fox 5 Atlanta, as reported by People, shows several travellers urging Harris to exit the aircraft.

“Please be considerate and get off the plane,” one passenger can be heard saying. At another point, multiple passengers began chanting, “Get off the plane!”

One traveller also expressed frustration over the impact on others, saying, “There's over 100 plus people on the plane. They're catching flights, they're going to see their families, to see their kids.”

Arrest And Charge

According to police, Harris attempted to leave the aircraft along with other passengers once everyone was instructed to deplane. She was taken into custody at the gate and charged with misdemeanour trespassing, People Magazine reported.

After Harris was removed, passengers were permitted to re‑board the aircraft.

Delta and FAA Response

In a statement shared with People, Delta Air Lines reiterated its policy regarding passenger conduct onboard.

“The safety of our customers and crew comes before all else, and Delta has zero tolerance for disruptive behaviour,” the airline said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires passengers to follow flight crew instructions at all times. Failure to comply can result in civil penalties of up to $13,910 (Rs 13,20,312), according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

After the passenger was escorted off, the flight continued to Atlanta without further issues.
