Saudi Arabia's desert landscape has transformed into a winter wonderland. The northern region of the country recently witnessed rare snowfall for the first time in 30 years. The snowfall, triggered by a powerful cold air mass from the north, was most prominent in Tabuk, Al Ula and Hail. Jabal Al-Lawz also received heavy snowfall when temperatures plummeted to -4 degrees Celsius.

1. Jabal Al Lawz, Tabuk: This is the most reliable spot for snow in the country. At 2,549 metres, the place regularly receives heavy enough snowfall in the winter. You can also enjoy sledging and snowboarding in the area. 

2. Al-Jawf Region: The area witnessed its first-ever historical snowfall in November 2024 and recurring snow in December 2025.

3. Turaif and Arar: Located on the northern border, Turaif holds the record for the coldest temperature in the country at -12 degrees Celsius. It sees frequent winter flurries throughout the season. 

4. Abha, Asir Province: Known as the "City of Fog," Abha experiences snow and hail in its high mountain peaks. You can hike, take scenic photos or enjoy snowball fun when conditions are right. 

5. Hail Region: The Aja and Salma mountains in Hail are known to transform into white landscapes during intense cold snaps.

Best Time To Visit Saudi Arabia For Snowfall

To witness snowfall in Saudi Arabia, you must head to the northern high-altitude regions between mid-December and February. While snow isn't guaranteed, as it depends on weather systems, this is your best window to plan. 

How To Reach Snowfall Regions In Saudi Arabia

By Air: Fly into Tabuk Airport or to Al-Ula, then travel north. Many travellers also enter via Riyadh or Jeddah and connect domestically.

By Road: From Tabuk City, Jabal Al Lawz is approximately a 3-hour drive north. Renting a car is the most flexible option, especially to reach remote snow areas. Roads in winter can be icy or snowy. Drive carefully and check the local weather before heading out.

By Public Transport: While buses connect major cities like Riyadh to Tabuk, they do not go directly to the mountain peaks. You will need to hire a private car or join a tour from Tabuk city.
