- A couple with an infant struggled to book adjacent seats on an IndiGo flight online
- IndiGo's system did not show any adjacent seat during web check-in
- IndiGo states adjacent seats are assigned automatically or via customer care call if unavailable online
Travelling with an infant can be overwhelming, especially on a flight. For parents, having adjacent seats is not a luxury but a necessity, allowing them to share responsibilities, comfort the baby, and respond quickly to any mid-air needs. Recently, an X user shared the experience of a friend travelling with his wife and infant on an IndiGo flight, who struggled to secure two adjacent seats during online booking.
According to the post, "As visible in the image, all available seats were shown in alternate rows with no adjacent seats selectable together. For almost a month, he kept checking, hoping adjacent seats would open up so he could book them in advance, but that never happened."
During web check-in, the system reportedly mandated seat selection for passengers travelling with an infant, yet still did not display adjacent seats. The post added, "He finally decided to simply check in without selecting seats. That's when the surprise came: 'Passengers travelling with an infant must select seats'. He would have paid for adjacent seats, but just look at the seats being shown."

With no solution available online, the passenger contacted customer care. Only then was he informed that, as per policy, families travelling with infants are supposed to be allotted to adjacent seats. The airline executive immediately assigned the couple two adjacent seats free of charge.
The post noted, "The executive immediately assigned two adjacent seats free of charge and completed the check-in, explaining that families travelling with infants are supposed to be given adjacent seats as per policy - but only when the customer calls them. They get available adjacent seats free, but if they want preferred seats, then they must pay."

"Deliberate Push" To Extract Seat Fees?
Questioning the system, the user hinted at a "deliberate push" to encourage seat-selection fees even for parents travelling with infants.
Reflecting on the incident, the user said, "This feels less like a system limitation and more like a deliberate push to extract seat fees, despite the airline having a policy to seat families with infants together," adding, "Customers deserve transparent and fair check-ins, not unnecessary friction designed to make them pay. If you are travelling with an infant, call customer care next time to book adjacent seats."
IndiGo Issues Statement For Parents Travelling With Infants
When asked about the seat-booking issue, an IndiGo spokesperson told NDTV, "At IndiGo, the comfort and safety of our customers, including families travelling with children, is a priority. When travelling with an infant (below two years of age), the infant travels on the parent's lap, and no separate seat is allocated in line with standard guidelines. When families travel with children, our systems are designed to automatically assign adjacent seats to one adult and one child within the same PNR upon completion of the booking."
The statement added, "Seat selection options may vary based on aircraft configuration and availability during online check-in. In such scenarios, customers may contact our call centre or seek assistance at the airport for personal support."
