Things To Do In Antarctica
Kayaking
Kayaking allows you to explore Antarctica's all-white landscapes at your own pace under the expert guidance of instructors. Click photos of pristine nature, floating icebergs, majestic glaciers and wildlife moving undisturbed in their natural habitat. You can also spot abandoned whaling stations and historic shipwrecks, with perhaps a whale popping up right next to your kayak or a leopard seal relaxing on an ice floe.
Scuba Diving
Adventure enthusiasts can scuba dive next to stunning ice formations while observing marine life below the surface. McMurdo Sound in the Ross Sea is one of the best places to try this activity. However, it is not meant for beginners, as participants are required to have completed at least 20-30 cold-water dives, hold a diving qualification and receive medical clearance.
Whale Spotting
A cruise expedition is ideally the best option to observe these gentle giants in action. Marine biologists and wildlife specialists assist visitors in identifying whale species while sharing insights about these magnificent animals. Meanwhile, expert photographers help you capture some of the finest shots. Popular species spotted here include humpback whales, minke whales, killer whales, fin whales and sei whales, among others.
Camping
Picture this: you are tucked inside a sleeping bag beneath the azure skies of the Southern Hemisphere, soaking in the beauty of the Antarctic coastline, a stunning bay, sea ice on the Southern Ocean and penguins squawking nearby. This is the height of the camping experience on the continent, where you can immerse yourself in polar nature and wake up to captivating sunsets and sunrises.
Penguin Watching
Penguin encounters are a major reason many visitors flock to Antarctica. For the best experience, head to the Falkland Islands, Antarctic Peninsula or the subantarctic regions to catch a glimpse of chinstrap, gentoo and crested penguins, including macaroni and rockhopper species. Ensure you maintain a five-metre distance and refrain from chasing, touching or feeding them.
Best Time To Visit Antarctica
The months from November to February are the best time to travel to Antarctica, as wildlife is easily visible, temperatures remain moderate and conditions allow for safe navigation.
How To Reach Antarctica
You can reach Antarctica by flying from Punta Arenas, Chile, to King George Island. Some tour operators also take tourists from Cape Town to Queen Maud Land via luxury flights. Alternatively, expedition ships from South America's southern tip drop visitors at the Antarctic Peninsula. Fly-cruise options offer both comfort and time efficiency.
