Delhi's expanding list of experiential public spaces is set to gain a new attraction. Baansera Park, located along the Yamuna floodplains, is set to introduce a permanent Kashmiri-style houseboat as part of a Rs 4 crore development plan fast-tracked by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). According to a report by The Times of India, the project aims to add a unique experiential attraction to the capital. Designed to evoke the charm of Dal Lake, the houseboat will blend traditional craftsmanship with modern amenities, offering visitors a distinctive leisure and event venue within the city.

Kashmir-Inspired Houseboat At Baansera Park

As reported by The Times of India, the 60-foot-long houseboat will be intricately crafted to resemble a traditional Kashmiri houseboat, complete with Persian-style carvings.

Although inspired by the floating homes of Srinagar, the structure will be permanently fixed to the ground near the park's cafe and is expected to have a lifespan of nearly 50 years. Expert artisans will carve decorative elements across railings, columns, Mehrab arches and exterior wall panels, while cedar wood windows will feature carved sash designs with glass panes.

What The Houseboat Will Include

As per reports, the houseboat will house a multi-purpose hall, lobby, pantry, store, eating areas, deck spaces at the front and rear, and toilet facilities.

A glazed meeting hall on the middle deck will be able to accommodate up to 15 people for corporate meetings and private events, along with a balcony and additional storage. Visitors will be able to access the structure via staircases on both sides.

Materials And Construction Details

The tender proposal outlines extensive use of premium wood. Deodar will be used at the base, cedar wood for the superstructure, and walnut wood for detailed carvings. Ceilings and interior wall panels will be finished with chinar wood, while the foundation at plinth level will be constructed using concrete to ensure long-term stability. The wood will be properly seasoned, sealed with all-weather materials, and coated with fire-retardant paint to enhance durability.

Timeline Of The Houseboat Project

To speed up execution, the DDA has initiated the tendering process to appoint a contractor, with construction expected to be completed within six months of the work order. The selected agency must submit final structural drawings vetted by designated institutes within 30 days of the award or before structural work begins, whichever is earlier.

Part Of A Larger Yamuna Rejuvenation Plan

The houseboat project forms part of the broader restoration and rejuvenation of the Yamuna floodplain stretch between Nizamuddin Bridge and the DND Flyway on the western bank.

Baansera Park itself has seen a steady expansion in attractions in recent years. In November 2024, Cafe Bamboo Oasis was opened to the public, followed by the launch of a tethered hot-air balloon in December 2025. The park also hosts cultural programmes and is set to welcome visitors for events such as the upcoming Palash Festival.
