IndiGo passengers across India have faced a turbulent week as the airline continued cancelling hundreds of flights amid an unexpected operational breakdown. The disruptions, now stretching into their fourth day, have stranded thousands of travellers, led to long queues at airports, and raised urgent questions about what triggered such a massive schedule collapse. While India's largest carrier has assured the aviation regulator that normal operations are expected to resume by February 10, concerns remain about ongoing delays and the immediate future of air travel for IndiGo customers.

Why IndiGo Flights Are Being Cancelled
The root of the crisis lies in a severe crew shortage, compounded by new duty-time rules that IndiGo says it misjudged while planning schedules. Peak winter season rush seems to have added to the chaos. The airline admitted to underestimating crew requirements under revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), which extended the definition of night duty from midnight-5 am to midnight-6 am. This change, combined with winter fog, heavy airspace congestion and technical issues at key airports, triggered a domino effect that saw 550 flights cancelled on Thursday alone.

Will IndiGo Flights Cancellations Continue?
Unfortunately, yes- at least for the next few days. IndiGo has warned that cancellations will persist for two to three days as part of a schedule-stabilisation process. Starting 8 December, the airline will reduce flight operations to prevent further disruption.
According to the DGCA, IndiGo is currently cancelling 170-200 flights daily, prompting strict compliance orders, including crew recruitment plans, revised scheduling strategies and fortnightly progress updates. The regulator will continue monitoring the airline's network and passenger-handling systems in real time.
IndiGo has issued a public apology, acknowledging the widespread inconvenience. For now, travellers are advised to check flight status frequently and prepare for potential delays until operations normalise in February.
