There is something magical about spontaneous weekend getaways. These unplanned escapes often lead us to places we didn't even know existed. Maharashtra, with its rugged Sahyadri ranges, ancient forts and misty cliffs, is full of such hidden treasures. Yet, even the most seasoned travellers continue to stumble upon new gems. Recently, one such discovery came from none other than Anand Mahindra, who found himself fascinated by a stunning spot that had somehow flown under his radar – Kokankada.

On Sunday, the Mahindra Group Chairman shared his latest find on X (formerly Twitter). “Another weekend, and the #SundayWanderer in me makes another discovery,” he wrote, admitting he was surprised at his “ignorance about the breathtaking landscapes” lying so close to home. Kokankada, located near Harishchandragad Fort in Ahmednagar district, is roughly 170 km from Mumbai and 160 km from Pune. It forms part of the Sahyadri range and, as Anand Mahindra noted, the name literally means “Konkan cliff.” The viewpoint, which stands tall at around 3,500 feet above sea level, offers one of the most striking views of the region.
Anand Mahindra shared that he came across this breathtaking site through a video posted by an X account and later explored more photos online. However, he was not entirely sure how safe the experience was in person. “I couldn't tell from the videos and photos if such a magnificent site is a safe viewing experience,” he wrote, inviting those who have been there to share insights.
The business mogul also suggested balancing beauty with safety – proposing eco-sensitive developments like well-marked trails, handrails, and solar-lit markers for trekkers. Anand Mahindra's vision didn't stop there — he imagined “a stargazing deck where visitors can look up at the cosmos from one of the darkest skies in Maharashtra.”
