An American software expert who recently moved to Ahmedabad with his family made an ardent Reddit post that went viral online and attracted a lot of local attention. Despite their early fondness for the city's lively culture and kind people, the family acknowledged that they feel lonely in their new surroundings and have resorted to locals for friendship and support. The Redditor explained in a post to r/AskAhmedabad that he and his spouse, along with their children, moved to the Shela neighbourhood in Gujarat approximately a month ago for a one-year job assignment. Although previous travels to Ahmedabad had been nice, there had been unforeseen hurdles when living there full-time as a family.

In the Reddit post titled “Foreigner Living in Ahmedabad,” the father commended the kindness of the locals and said he enjoyed Ahmedabad's famous cuisine, especially paan. However, he revealed that his family is already experiencing feelings of boredom and isolation.
In an effort to "get engaged a bit more with the community," the family requested information on social events that welcome expatriates as well as assistance in locating a private Gujarati tutor. Although they still found those responses "charming," they pointed out that because Western families are comparatively rare in their area of the city, locals may be reluctant to create contact. “Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated,” the Redditor concluded the post.

Reddit users from Ahmedabad responded swiftly and empathetically, with several recommendations urging them to help the family integrate. Some suggested signing up for weekend meetups with a nearby running club, such as Runcrew or Brews & Shoes. Others recommended joining art-workshop communities like Tvastra, heritage walks, or the recently established Kirdar Creative Club, which organises movie screenings, open mic evenings, and jam sessions.
“Navratri is coming up, maybe learn garba and you will have a good chance of making a lot of friends in Navratri,” one Reddit user commented, encouraging the family to enrol in garba dance sessions.

Festivals of culture and language acquisition were also emphasised. The family was urged by several users to enrol in Gujarati, or at the very least, Hindi, classes.
“You can meet new people and socialise with other expats and locals by getting annual memberships at Belvedere Club or any of the other clubs nearby,” the user added.

Other recommendations included volunteering with NGOs, organising community gatherings like Kaunversations, joining paddle play, the Pickleball community, and organising book-reading clubs like AhmedabadReads to foster meaningful and social connections in the city.
