There's a certain laidback charm that defines Cologne, a vibe I sensed almost instantly as I walked from my hotel to Germany's most visited landmark. The world's tallest twin-spired church, Cologne Cathedral, towers over the city and is visible from almost every part of its historic heart. Yet, Cologne's appeal stretches far beyond its iconic cathedral. As I discovered, 24 hours is more than enough time to get a true taste of the city - from its historical landmarks and cultural highlights to its deeply rooted beer traditions.

10:00 am: It All Begins At Cologne Cathedral

Cologne Cathedral sits at the spiritual and cultural heart of the city and stands as a powerful symbol of its resilience. Construction began as early as 1248, but the cathedral was completed to its original design only in 1880. It survived extensive Allied bombing during World War II and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in the 1990s.

Its imposing twin spires, rising to 157 metres, form the largest church facade in the world. Take your time exploring the interiors, where highlights include the striking Richter Window, crafted from more than 11,000 squares of hand-blown glass. Visitors can climb over 500 steps for panoramic views of the Rhine, but if you're short on time, there's another excellent viewing deck later in the day.

11:30 am: Discovering The Charms Of Altstadt

Just a short walk from the cathedral lies one of Cologne's most charming neighbourhoods - Altstadt, or Old Town - set along the banks of the Rhine. This picturesque area transports you back to the Middle Ages with its cobbled streets, colourful houses and lively squares.

Altstadt is an ideal place to shop for local souvenirs and gourmet treats. Look out for the European Union's More Than Food quality assurance stamps such as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication). I explored local favourites like jams from the Marmeladen Haus and distinctive mustards that highlight how the EU champions regional food heritage. Cologne is also an easy city to explore on two wheels, with options like Nextbike available if you prefer cycling around town.

12:30 pm: A Taste Of Cologne

Cologne's brewery cuisine traditions come to life in iconic spots like Brauhaus Paffgen. I tried several local favourites here, including sausages, meatloaf, schnitzel and hearty fried potato dishes. Peters Brauhaus, another popular address in Altstadt, is equally worth a visit.

Be sure to order Himmel un Aad, one of Cologne's most-loved dishes. Translating to "heaven and earth," it features mashed potatoes, apple compote, fried onions and black pudding - a combination that perfectly captures the comfort-food spirit of the city.

2:00 pm: Raise Your Glasses And Say Prost!

Munich may remain my favourite beer city, but Cologne comes very close thanks to its signature Kolsch, an integral part of the region's identity. This top-fermented beer, with its pale golden colour, is traditionally served in a slim 200 ml cylindrical glass called a Stange.

I attempted to imitate the local waiters who effortlessly weave through bustling brewery halls balancing circular trays, known as Kranz, stacked with glasses. I quickly handed mine back to the designated tour guide during a visit to Brauwelt in Cologne's Kalk district. The tour offers insight into Cologne's brewing process and includes tastings along the way.

This historic industrial site is also home to Cologne's oldest distillery. The Cologne Convention of 1986 laid down strict brewing standards, stipulating that Kolsch can only be produced within a 50-kilometre radius of the city. This helped Kolsch secure PGI status under the EU's More Than Food scheme in 1997.

4:00 pm: Museum Lover? Cologne Has You Covered

Cologne boasts an impressive museum scene. My personal favourite is Museum Ludwig, a must-visit for pop-art enthusiasts and home to several notable works by Pablo Picasso. For a different cultural flavour, head to the Ehrenfeld district, where Cologne's love for street art plays out across murals and installations.

Another fascinating stop is the Farina Fragrance Museum, dedicated to the city's perfume heritage. Located in an 18th-century production house, it traces the origins of Eau de Cologne. Remarkably, the world's oldest perfume factory has operated here since 1723.

5:30 pm: 360-Degree Views From The Cologne Triangle

Aim to reach the Cologne Triangle around twilight for one of the best viewpoints in the city. The observation deck offers stunning panoramic views of Cologne Cathedral, the Rhine and the Hohenzollern Bridge - famous for the thousands of love locks attached to its railings since the early 2000s. It's easily one of the best spots for photography in Cologne.

7:00 pm: Cruise Mode On The Rhine

There's arguably no better way to experience Cologne than from the gentle flow of the Rhine. Evening boat cruises allow you to see the city illuminated as reflections shimmer across the water. These relaxed cruises capture Cologne at its most charming and provide the perfect end to a day exploring the city.
