The BJP has announced its candidates for the September 5 bypolls to Dhanpur and Boxanagar assembly constituencies in Tripura's Sepahijala district, a party leader said in Agartala today.

Bypolls to seven assembly seats including the one vacated following the death of Congress veteran Oommen Chandy will be held on September 5, the Election Commission said on Tuesday.

BJP MLA Biswabandhu Sen was today elected Speaker of the Tripura Assembly with 32 votes in the 60-member house as Tipra Motha Party, the main opposition, abstained from voting.

Hours ahead of meeting the BJP leadership for talks on a possible alliance, Tripura's former royal and Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Manikya Debbarma tweeted this morning that he "has not compromised" and asked his followers to "wait and watch".

A week after it posted a comfortable win in Tripura, the BJP is learnt to have reached out again to tribal party Tipra Motha, which emerged as the big story in this Assembly election by winning 13 seats.
