The oil spill in Chennai that originated from the refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Ltd (CPCL) has now crossed at least 20 square kilometre into the sea, said the coast guard.

Green Court Summons Centre, State Representatives Over Chennai Oil Spill

National Green Tribunal has summoned representatives of both the centre and the state government over the spill of hazardous oil and Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG off the Tamil Nadu coast last week. The green court was hearing two petitions which contradicts the assurance given by authorities involved in cleaning up the water.

As several government agencies are engaged in cleaning up the shoreline following the oil spill after two ships collided near the Kamarajar Port recently, the Coast Guard today said nearly 40 tonnes of oil sludge and 27 tonnes of oil mixed with water were collected so far.
