Lalu Prasad's wife Rabri Devi has said she and her son will run his party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal or RJD, like "Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi run the Congress." But Mr Prasad has reportedly sent word from the Ranchi jail he is lodged in that there is no plan yet to appoint an interim leader.

Faced with intense criticism, Nitish Kumar's Bihar government has released a prominent ad in newspapers instructing the principal and cook in every school to first taste the free mid-day meal before it is served to children. Officials in charge of checking the meals will also have to taste the food and record the quality.

On July 15, a court in Ranchi will decide whether politician Lalu Prasad Yadav is guilty of embezzling Rs 30 crore from the government during his earlier term as chief minister of Bihar. Mr Yadav may attempt to change that by asking the Supreme Court to transfer the judge hearing the case.
