Fastag Mandatory

The Union government has informed the Bombay High Court that making FASTag mandatory for all vehicles running on national highways does not breach a citizen's fundamental right to freedom of movement in any way.

The Bombay High Court on Friday directed the Union government to file an affidavit in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the decision to make FASTag, the electronic toll collection chip, mandatory for all vehicles at toll plazas on national highways.

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea and asked the petitioner, a retired civil servant, to first approach the Delhi High Court in connection with his petition challenging the mandatory fitting of FASTags in motor vehicles required for renewing of fitness certificate, and also for insurance by third party.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said the deadline for the implementation wouldn't be extended further, and vehicle owners should immediately adopt this e-payment facility.

The automatic toll plaza payment system FASTag will become mandatory from today midnight, the centre said on Sunday in a statement. Those who don't install FASTag in their vehicles or have a tag that does not work will have to pay twice the fee for the category of the vehicle they are driving.

Toll collection through FASTag crossed Rs. 80 crores with a record 50 lakh FASTag transactions for the first time on December 24, 2020. FASTag will be mandatory for all vehicles starting January 1, 2021.
