GST collections grew by 11 per cent to over Rs 1.59 lakh crore in August on the back of improved compliance and reduced evasion, with experts forecasting higher mop-up to continue in the upcoming festive season.

Collections from Goods and Services Tax (GST) rose 28 per cent to Rs 1.43 lakh crore in August, the Finance Ministry said on Thursday.

In August government settled Rs 23,043 crore to CGST and Rs 19,139 crore to SGST from IGST as regular settlement.

GST collection in July had come at Rs 87,422 crore, while GST for the month of August last year was Rs 98,202 crore

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday reached out to the chief ministers of West Bengal, Maharashtra and Jharkhand on the issue of compensation to states and will hold a meeting with them to evolve a collective stand at the August 27 GST Council meeting, sources said.

The gross revenue collections from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in July stood at Rs 1.02 lakh crore.

The revenues collected in August are slightly lower than July collection of Rs 96,483 crore, and June collection of Rs 95,610 crore.

Total GST collection for August touched Rs 90,669 crore, against Rs 94,063 crore mopped up in the first month of the GST rollout.

The tax collections for August stood at Rs 90,669 crore ($14 billion) and only 3.8 million of the near 7 million taxpayers who needed to file their monthly GST returns had done so, the government's provisional data showed.

In August 2016, Parliament passed the GST Constitutional Bill, which paved the way for a uniform indirect tax regime in the country. The new law, which seeks to give unprecedented powers to the Centre in collecting indirect taxes in the country, is expected to increase the government revenue by improving the compliance rate.
