'Monument mitras' (friends of heritage sites) have been appointed for five heritage sites in Delhi, including the Red Fort, under the government's ambitious 'Adopt a Heritage' scheme.

Notwithstanding criticism over the government's decision to give Red Fort to a corporate for upkeep, Tourism Minister KJ Alphons today insisted that his ministry will expand the 'Adopt A Heritage Site' project to put more monuments under private care.

The centre was bombarded by criticism from the opposition on Saturday for letting a private company adopt the iconic Red Fort in the national capital. But less than two months ago, a parliamentary committee had a very different view about the government's initiative to get corporates to adopt monuments.

A Sikh couple in the UK have claimed that they were refused permission to adopt a white child because of their "cultural heritage" and told to adopt a child from India instead.

The Taj Mahal, a Unesco World Heritage site, will be adopted under the Clean India Campaign, the tourism ministry and Agra officials said on Tuesday.
