HC moved for cancelling India-Sri Lanka cricket matches

Madurai: A PIL has been filed in the Madras High Court's bench here seeking cancellation of India-Sri Lanka cricket matches until the disputes between Tamils and Sinhalese are settled and total peace prevails in the Bay of Bengal.

In his petition, S Calvin Christopher, an advocate, alleged that whenever the Lankan cricket team was defeated by India, whether it was in the World Cup in April last year or later, there was backlash from that country's navalmen on innocent fishermen from Tamil Nadu.

He claimed that after India defeated Sri Lanka in the recent triangular cricket series in Australia, petrol bombs were hurled at Indian fishermen.

Taking into consideration the safety of the Indian fishermen, the court should stay future matches between India and Sri Lanka, the petitioner said.
