Two dozen injured as elephant runs amok

Thrissur: Close to two dozen people were injured on Wednesday as an elephant participating in the Thrissur Pooram festival ran amok, police said.

Inspector General of Police S Gopinath told Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) that none of the injured was in serious condition.

The incident happened around 12.15 pm when an elephant, Kalidasan, turned hostile.

When the mahouts tried to tame the animal, it ran in different directions, frightening devotees who fled in panic.

"That's how some people fell down and got injured. None is in any serious condition," said Mr Gopinath.

He said it took two mahouts 15 minutes to control the elephant.

Caparisoned elephants are a major draw in temple festivities in Kerala. The event was held on Tuesday.
