Coimbatore: Engineering students create record for making pollution masks

Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu: Students of a local engineering college in Coimbatore today created a world record by making 2,493 handmade pollution masks in 30 minutes.

Three hundred students of the Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology entered into the UK-based 'Elite World Records' on achieving the feat, for which they were awarded a certificate by Santikar Young, Designated Adjudicator for South India Elite World Records.

Being the first in this new category, it would be a record even if they made 1,000 masks, Young said.

Principal of the college Dr Annadurai said the main idea behind the attempt was to create awareness among the people that pollution masks could easily be made by common man thus creating entrepreneurs, which in turn help prevent or minimize diseases caused by air pollution.

The masks will be distributed free to public by the students, who were part of Entrepreneurship Development Cell - UNIK - with the motive of creating business opportunities for students and encouraging them to start up their own dream company.
