Woman Complains Husband 'Hoards' Money Instead Of Enjoying Life: 'He's A Penny-Pincher'

A woman has sought the internet's help regarding her husband's spending habits. In a social media post titled, "Husband likes to hoard money instead of enjoying life!" the woman revealed that despite their high combined income, which included his Rs 3 lakh in-hand monthly salary and her Rs 1.5 lakh compensation package, they were unable to enjoy life due to his stubborn reluctance to spend money on anything.

Calling her husband a 'penny-pincher', the woman said she understood the rationale behind certain spending decisions, but his inability to spend on vacation trips was getting to her.

"Husband and I both earn well, but he is a penny-pincher. His in-hand is around Rs 3 lakh, while mine is Rs 1.5 lakh. A few things I understand: not buying a house for another 5-7 years, a car for utility and not show," the woman said.

"But the main category he penny pinches is on trips, either not taking any or only going on budget ones. Btw, when we do go, I pay for myself. He has to pay his half. So no gold digger talks, please lol," she added.

The woman highlighted that her husband's family behaved similarly when it came to groceries and wedding events, which perhaps explained his thought process. However, she said she was 'discouraged' as they planned to have children in the future.

"It is so discouraging. We plan to have kids in three years, long trips on hold for maybe four years after that. Am I wrong to expect he agrees to spend on trips now? Btw, moral of the story: if you are in the arranged marriage process, the salary and net worth do not guarantee a certain kind of lifestyle," she said.

The woman wondered if she should just take trips with friends and family if the spending issues continue, even though she knew it would not be as much fun without her husband.

'Scarcity Mindset'

As the post gained traction, social media users suggested that the husband may have come from a relatively difficult financial situation growing up, which might have dictated his spending threshold.

"Scarcity mindset, usually seen in people who were not well off before. It severely affects lifestyle later. Good luck," said one user while another added: "This happens when there is no financial plan. Sit with him to understand the long-term financial goals like retirement, house. Then the calculation will give you numbers for what amount you can spend without losing any goals."

A third commented: "Has your husband come from difficult situations in his growing years? People have their own thresholds to start spending, especially when coming into earning more money suddenly."

A fourth said: "Yeah, money is not a rational thing. It's an emotional one. This behaviour seems to stem from some anxiety around money. Either personal or generational."
