 What actually happened on July 4th, 1776?

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, primarily authored by Thomas Jefferson. This document announced the 13 American colonies' separation from British rule, proclaiming them as independent states. It outlined grievances against King George III and articulated the principles of individual rights and self-governance.

Back then, America was divided into 13 colonies, which were: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Providence, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Carolina. 

However, it's worth noting that the actual vote for independence took place on July 2, 1776, when the Continental Congress approved a resolution of independence proposed by Richard Henry Lee. The Declaration of Independence was adopted two days later, on July 4, which has since become the celebrated date of American independence.

The signing of the document began on August 2, 1776, and took several months to complete, as representatives of the 13 colonies added their signatures. July 4th has become a federal holiday in the United States, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the country's birth.
