Sub inspector arrested after detained woman tried to kill self

Mumbai: A police sub inspector attached with Malwani police station was arrested for allegedly detaining a 43-year-old woman, who reportedly attempted suicide in the lockup. The woman was locked-up for three days and is in a critical condition at the hospital.

The police sub inspector, Munir Shaikh, detained her for questioning for a theft. But he failed to make an entry in police station diary. Shaikh has been booked for wrongful restraint and wrongful confinement.

According to police, a resident filed a complaint on Saturday last week about her mangalsutra and gold chain worth Rs 3 lakh going missing."Following that Shaikh, who was the investigating officer, detained a woman, Kunda Shinde with her 17-year-old daughter, who is the neighbour of the complainant. She was in police custody for the next three days. If he had detained her for inquiry then he should have recorded it in the dairy and informed his senior officer," said a police officer.

"On Tuesday, after having lunch Shinde found a nylon rope on the wall and hanged herself," said additional police commissioner (North Region) Ramrao Pawar.

"A woman police constable found Shinde hanging from with the nylon rope. She then immediately cut the rope and called everyone else in the station," said Pawar. The police officer then rushed her to the Raksha hospital at Marve road, Malwani area where she was admitted to the ICU.

"Shaikh was arrested for punishment for wrongful restraint and wrongful confinement for three or more days. He was produced in the court and granted judicial custody," said Pawar.
