Parents refuse to claim maid's body suspecting rape

Mumbai: The parents of maid Sangeeta Shihirwal, who was found dead on the first-floor level roof of an Oshiwara building on Tuesday, refused to claim her body on Thursday, saying that the police investigation was not proper.

Preliminary investigation indicated that she committed suicide by jumping from the 15th floor passage window. Her family later alleged that she was raped and thrown out of the window.

Her relatives and community members staged a demonstration outside the building, Castle Yashodep Tower, exhorting other servants not to work there. More than 50 women and community leaders staged a silent protest outside the police station demanding a "fair" probe.

Earlier on Wednesday, the police had completed post-mortem formalities and asked the parents to claim the body for cremation. The post-mortem report revealed that 19-year-old Shihirwal was not sexually assaulted and her death was caused by the fatal injuries she sustained on falling from a high altitude.

Accordingly, the Oshiwara police registered a case of accidental death.

Forensic science experts visited the scene of the incident on Thursday. They also lifted fingerprints from several spots in the building.

Meanwhile, the managing committee of the building decided to enhance security measures by installing CCTV cameras at the society gates and in the lobby. "We are also going to issue identity cards to all drivers, servants and vendors who visit the society premises on regular basis," said Dalbir Singh Valha, secretary of the society.
