Sometimes, many times, you don't see them coming - the dark thoughts that come unannounced, unwelcome. One moment you are standing in an elevator having a conversation with someone and the next moment your head is filled with unreasonable thoughts which make so sense and yet knock the breath out of you, fill you with dread and fear.
There may be many reasons for those thoughts come, but mostly and many times they are narrowed down to anxiety. Anxiety is basically a disorder than brings with it an apprehension, fear, worrying thoughts which may or may not have any base in truth. Sometimes these thoughts get too intense and hamper everyday life and the quality of it.
Although anxiety is a mental health concern and can require treatment, if you are met with these thoughts there are some immediate things you can do.
1. Breath slowly
Taking deep breaths is the obvious thing to suggest but it is essential. You have to calm your nerves down and lower your heart rate.
2. Go out to an open space
Walking out to an open space will help you clear your head out. It also helps you feel less claustrophobic and that helps a lot.
3. Try to reason out the negative thoughts
Tell yourself why a negative thought is baseless and your fear, whatever it is, has no foundation in truth and reality. Stop the circle of negative thoughts by screaming louder than the thoughts themselves. Replace those thoughts with a calming message.
4. Repeat a reassuring thought
Remind yourself something positive - like how you battled anxiety before and you are sure to do it again. It can be something as simple as "I am fine, everything is fine."
5. Distract yourself
Take a walk, call a friend, listen to a song, read a book, count. The idea is to distract yourself from the dark thoughts so that eventually they fade into nothingness.
These things become your first aid box for whenever an anxiety attack. And it can be an subjective as objective. So these can wary.
