And so, Kaia Gerber, Cindy's 16-year-old daughter, collaborating with Chanel's creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, seems like a natural career progression. Karl Lagerfeld (the brand) recently announced that Kaia, who is already making waves on global runways, is currently in the process of designing a collection for it. It's an enviable career progression no doubt - imagine collaborating with THE Karl Lagerfeld at the age of 16 - but a natural one.
The Karl Lagerfeld x Kaia collection will include ready-to-wear clothes, footwear, sunglasses and jewellery. According to Women's Wear Daily, it will be a blend of "Lagerfeld's Parisian chic aesthetic and Gerber's signature West Coast casual style". The collection will be available at Karl Lagerfeld stores, Karl.com and at select partners, come September.
Kaia Gerber shot to fame with her very first outing on the runway last year, debuting at the New York Fashion Week 2218, and going on to walk in a total of 18 high-end designer shows - including Versace, Prada, Saint Laurent and Calvin Klein. She has also walked for Karl Lagerfeld before, opening the Chanel SS18 show in Paris in October and the brand's Métiers d'Art show in December.
With a staggering 2.6 million Instagram followers, Kaia is already a force to reckon with in the world of youth fashion brands, and a perfect partner for fashion veteran Karl Lagerfeld to tap into the younger market. It's not for nothing that Kendall Jenner while photographing Kaia for Love magazine said, "She's in her prime, both physically and mentally. She's getting more beautiful, which I did not even think was possible. Listen, were all trying to get all our work in now before she hits the scene. When that happens we'll all go broke!"
But why is a 16-year-old, even a famous one, getting to design for Karl Lagerfeld? Kaia, daughter of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, has inherited not only her mother's endless legs and blowout hair but also her sunny, laidback California Girl style. She dresses like many teens her age would, but with that added polish that comes with being the soon-to-be-supermodel daughter of one of the most iconic 'supers' of all time.
