From the eyebrow-raising to the positively unnerving, beauty saw some very strange moments this year.

While some beauty trends swoop in and steal our hearts with a single celebrity look (we're looking at you, dewy makeup), there are others that do the exact opposite. There are beauty trends so ridiculous, they make you wonder whether you should react to them with laughter or tears (or both). For reasons we can't fathom, seven such trends went viral this year and caused a craze on social media. We've recovered just enough to round them up here and add a fervent wish that they will forever remain in 2017.

1. Carved Brows

From wispy dragon-like spikes to pencilled-in waves, the brow department saw plenty of eccentric looks this year. One of the craziest was carved brows. With a stark outline separating the brows from the surrounding eyeshadow, 'carving' was meant to give your brows an emphasised, engraved appearance.

2. Nose Hair Extensions

While many invest in nose hair trimmers to keep those unsightly nasal strands from sticking out, this trend made them more visible. By wearing eyelash extensions around their nostrils, women accentuated their nose hair by at least a hundred times. Extensions for the tresses and lashes, we get. But this? No, no and no, thank you.

3. Lollipop Lips

Remember what it was like to find your lips red and sticky after eating a lollipop? Well, it's now a trend. Lollipop lips intentionally gives the lips an uneven finish and smudged appearance that looks like one has eaten a three-course meal. While we're not fans of this trend either, at least it doesn't make us squirm uncomfortably like the nose hair extensions.

4. Black Highlighter

While the beauty world went wild with radiant, dewy skin, a product called black highlighter sneaked in somehow in 2017 to cash in on it. Unfortunately, it was the absolute opposite of the real highlighter we know and love. The black highlighter emphasised the cheekbones in the most drastic and unflattering way possible. In our opinion, it looks no different from a large pan of matte black eyeshadow and deserves to stay just there, in the eye area.

5. Everything As A Makeup Applicator

For some reason, in 2017, everyone developed a strange aversion to actual makeup brushes. Instead, a makeup challenge emerged which led to using absolutely anything under the sun to apply makeup. This included using eggs, tampons, condoms and even marshmallows to apply foundation and blush. Why waste a good marshmallow on makeup when you can toast it instead?

6. 100 Layers Of Makeup

Maybe due to extra makeup lying around or being really free, makeup addicts created the 100 layers trend. As the name suggests, it includes layering a product like liquid lipstick or nail polish literally 100 times. The result? A horrifying finish that's cakey, with awful peeling. We shudder to think how the brave undertakers of this challenge got around to removing those mounds of makeup.

7. Fidget Spinner Everything

As if fidget spinners taking over our free time weren't enough, they made their way to the makeup world too. Fidget spinner-styled lip products, manicures and even eye makeup made a splash in 2017. And somehow, found quite an audience in beauty enthusiasts and makeup artists.

Nope, these don't even make it into the 'so bad it's good' category. If you've tried any of these, tell us in the comments.
