"Going green" may only sound like something people are doing for effect and to stay in on the many social media trends that crop up each year. But believe it or not, going green and making your home a more environmentally friendly place will only be beneficial for you - both in the long and short runs. It may not be the easiest thing to do with the insurmountable options available in the market today - in terms of food, beauty products, house items, etc - that are all full of artificial flavours and ingredients. There are however small things you can do that'll add up in making your home greener and safer for you and your family.
1. Take your shoes off outside
Our shoes come in contact with asphalt, dirt, chemicals, pesticides and who knows what else on a daily basis. As soon as we enter our homes, we bring with us all those unhealthy contaminants and spread them over our floors and carpets. And then we proceed to breathe that air, eat our food there and do a plethora of other things. Take off your shoes as soon as you enter your home. This gives you a simple way to cut down on some of those germs present in your home.
2. Try and buy organic food
Yes, it's true that organic food can often cost a lot more than conventionally grown and sold food, but eating organically grown food can drastically cut down on the toxin containing pesticides present in your body. Fruits, vegetables and all the different forms of meat you might be eating to get your daily protein are supposed to make you healthier, not sicker. So say 'no thanks' to foods that you know are filled with chemicals, artificial colours, and laden with processed sugar.
3. Stop microwaving plastic containers
Heating plastic in microwaves can leach dangerous, hormone-disrupting chemicals into your food. Instead, invest in a set of good glass containers that you can use to heat your food in the microwave. It may seem like a more expensive option, again, but the investment will be worth it when you think about the health benefits it comes with.
