Kolkata: An Air Force officer was killed in Kolkata this morning after being hit by a speeding Audi car while he was supervising practice for the January 26 Republic Day parade.

Corporal Abhimanyu Gaud, 30, was supervising the practice parade at Red Road when he was knocked off his feet by the car. The incident took place at around 6.30 am.

After hitting the officer, the car rammed a barricade before coming to a stop. The driver allegedly left the car and ran away.

The officer, seriously injured, was taken to the military hospital where he died.

The car has been seized by the police and the driver is yet to be found.

The road is normally closed to civilian traffic when the practice is on.

"We are looking for the driver. We are investigating how the car broke the security barrier and entered the practice zone," said city police commissioner Surajit Kar Purakayastha.
