Congress Eyes Majority In Karnataka Legislative Council Polls

Counting of the votes will take place on December 30.

Bangalore: Voting for 25 seats of the Legislative Council or Upper House of the Karnataka Assembly was held in the state on Sunday.

A total of 125 candidates contested for the seats with maximum fielded by the three major parties in fray, the ruling Congress, the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular).

The offices of gram, zilla and taluk panchayats and corporation and municipal offices were used for polling which ended at 4 pm.

Speaking on the party's chances, KJ George of the Congress said, "Every election is important in a democratic set up. Our candidates are definitely going to win. That's what we know."

The opposition BJP was equally confident. Union Minister Ananth Kumar, who also cast his vote said, "Out of 25 seats in Karnataka, maximum number of seats will be bagged by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Like in Lok Sabha, we will be number 1. And the countdown for Siddaramaiah Congress Government will begin."

Union minister Sadananda Gowda said, "The members of legislative council can give a proper direction to the government on how to take up the development agenda forward. So I feel that this is one of the important area."

Greater numbers in the council for the Congress would help to pass bills in the upper house.  But the BJP has a majority in the council which they hope to not lose. But more than it would affect the state's politics, the results will be a prestige issue for the parties.

"Upper house is very important. We will continue with this majority to have the upper hand," added Mr Kumar.

Counting of the votes will take place on December 30.
