Couple kills 4 daughters, self

Jaipur: In a shocking incident, a couple belonging to the economically weaker section committed suicide after killing their four daughters in Rodawali village of Hanumangarh district late on Saturday night. This was the couple's second suicide attempt since Friday.

The deceased couple, identified as Om Prakash (35) and his wife Shukli Devi (30), killed themselves after poisoning their daughters Puja (8), Anjali (5), Archana (3) and month-old girl child Munni, Hanumangarh superintendent of police Mohan Singh told DNA on Sunday.

Though the couple did not leave a suicide note, the police -- on the basis of statements given by neighbours and family members -- said that the birth of their fourth girl child and their lean financial condition could have prompted the couple to take this extreme step.

"We are yet to ascertain the exact reason which forced them to commit suicide. But it appears that the couple were disheartened by the birth of another girl child in the family," an investigating officer said.

While questioning neighbours, the police discovered that the couple did not earn much and were living hand to mouth. "They barely managed to meet their daily expenses. After after the birth of fourth daughter, about a month back, the couple had started looking very depressed and used to stay aloof," the officer added.

"Om Prakash and his wife Shukli had tried to end their lives on Friday by consuming poison, but were rescued by neighbours. The family was rushed to a nearby hospital where their stomachs were flushed," the officer said.

However, when the couple poisoned their entire family late on Saturday night, nobody could rescue them. On Sunday, the bodies were found lying in a pool of vomit.

"Their bodies were handed over to their relatives after the post-mortem," police added.

As the news of the family's death spread, the whole village went into mourning.
