Ahmedabad:

A day after a Gujarati businessman was shot dead in the US, Chief Minister Anandiben Patel today sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to ensure a fair and speedy probe by the American authorities.

"Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel has sought Prime Minister's intervention for a fair probe by the US authorities into the murder case," Gujarat Assembly chief whip Pankaj Desai told reporters.

28-year-old Gujarati businessman Amit Patel was gunned down by an unidentified assailant in his family-owned liquor shop in Irvington of  Edison town in the USA yesterday.

Mr Patel originally hailed from Uttarsanda village near Nadiad town of Kheda district in Gujarat.

Mr Desai, who is the BJP MLA from Nadidad, said that he had taken up the issue with Gujarat Chief Minister Patel after which she took it up with the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, Mr Patel's parents and wife left for the USA today, a relative said.

"We got to know about his (Patel's) tragic death. We do not know who did it but it was really a tragic incident. His mother, father and wife were here (in Uttarsanda village) to attend some family function. They left for the USA today to seek a fair probe into the murder case," the family's relative Janak Gaur told reporters today.

Mr Patel was alone in the liquor store owned by his father, when the incident took place. There was no damage to the store or indication of a robbery and only one shot was fired.
