Sikhs worried about hate crimes in California

Washington: The Sikh community in Sacramento, California, has offered a reward of 30,000 dollars for any information on the men who shot two elderly Sikh men on Friday evening. One died immediately, the other is in hospital.

Nobody has been arrested so far. The police has not ruled out the possibility of the shooting being a hate crime.

The attackers were in a light brown pickup truck when they shot Surinder Singh, 68, and Gurmej Atwal, 78, on Friday evening. The victims, who live next door to each other, were walking in their neighbourhood in Elk Grove Sacramento, California, when they were shot.

While Mr Singh died on the spot, Mr Atwal is reported to be in critical condition.

"In racial attacks, Sikh-Americans with turbans and full beards are often mistaken as Talibans. We are very disturbed by the recent violent attack in our community," said Darshan Singh Mundy, spokesman of the Sacramento Sikh Temple.

Four months ago, a Sikh cab driver named Harbhajan Singh was shot dead in West Sacramento," said Mr Mundy.

"We urge the Indian Ambassador to the US, Meera Shankar, to take up the matter with the US Government," he said.
