Nearly three weeks after Deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr YS Sachan was found dead under mysterious circumstances in jail, Ex-CMO AK Shukla was arrested today in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the state health department.
Former Chief Medical Officer A K Shukla was in Uttar Pradesh government's Family Welfare department. He was arrested from the Trauma Centre in Lucknow. Police have found financial irregularities against A K Shukla after investigations began into Dr Sachan's murder.
A judicial probe commissioned by the Uttar Pradesh government had found that Dr YS Sachan was murdered. Dr Sachan, 52, was the Deputy CMO in the state government's Family Welfare department. After jail officials said he had committed suicide in a Lucknow jail, a post-mortem revealed that his body had eight injuries caused by a sharp weapon. Dr Sachan died days before he was to be questioned by the police about a case that seemed poised to embarrass the government.
He was arrested in April for the murder of his boss, Dr BP Singh. The government said Dr Sachan was guilty of corruption, and hired assassins to kill Dr Singh to prevent him from exposing Dr Sachan's financial crimes. The government also accused Dr Sachan of links to the murder of Dr Vinod Arya, who was Dr Singh's predecessor.
