New Delhi: As ties between India and Nepal pass through a prickly patch, Prime Minister Narendra Modi must call an all-party meeting and send a political delegation to the Himalayan to improve the talks, the Janata Dal-United has demanded.

This suggestion has come from JD-U lawmaker K C Tyagi, who is known to be close to the political leadership of Nepal. "We will help the government as we have good relations with everyone in Nepal," Mr Tyagi told NDTV.

His comments come as a response to Nepal cancelling the visit of its President Bidhya Devi, who was scheduled to visit New Delhi on May 9.

When Nepal's ambassador Deep Upadhaya expressed his displeasure to Prime Minister Oli over the cancellation, he was recalled on Saturday.

Sources in Nepal say Mr Upadhaya, a former Nepali Congress leader, was seen as being "too close" to India and as someone who's was trying to topple the Oli government.

"There is definitely a trust deficit between India and Nepal for various reasons and this is for the first time that thinking is manifested through action. India is largely perceived to be interfering in Nepal's internal politics," senior Nepalese journalist Yuvraj Ghimire told NDTV.

So far, India has maintained a studied silence but for a tweet from senior BJP leader Ram Madahav. With Nepal and China moving closer, political observers say Prime Minister Modi will have step in to ensure India's special relation with her neighbour continues.
