The Cyclone Phet, building up in the Arabian Sea, has intensified into a category five storm. That is a super cyclone.

But the course has changed. Instead of advancing towards the Gujarat coast, it is now heading towards the coast of Oman in the Arabian Peninsula.

It is, however, expected to head back towards the Karachi and Gujarat coasts over the weekend, though as a weaker storm.

The weather department says Phet will nonetheless bring more rain over Gujarat and Maharashtra.

It has been raining heavily in many coastal districts of the state including Jamnagar, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Bharuch, Surat and others like Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Vadodara already. (Read: Cylone Phet intensifies, rain in Gujarat)

The state has been put on alert, fishermen have been warned against going to sea and people have been told to avoid going outdoors. (Read: Cyclone Phet disrupts Tata, Modi at Nano plant)

Weather department officials also say the cyclone in the Arabian Sea has halted the progress of Indian monsoon winds temporarily, for at least two to three days.
