This is the third increase in fuel rates since May 15, when state-owned oil companies began passing on higher energy costs linked to the Middle East conflict in a phased manner.

Prices were earlier raised by Rs 3 per litre on May 15 and by 90 paise on May 19. With the latest revision, fuel prices have risen by nearly Rs 5 per litre in total.

Rates continue to vary from state to state due to differences in value-added tax (VAT).

The back-to-back increases come after global crude oil prices surged more than 50% since late February following US-Israeli strikes on Iran and disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route.

Petrol and diesel prices are now at their highest levels since May 2022. Rates had remained frozen since April 2022 except for a Rs 2-per-litre cut in March 2024 ahead of Lok Sabha elections. The fuel price increases come amid broader efforts by the government to contain India's oil import bill and reduce fuel consumption.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had last week urged fuel conservation, work-from-home practices and reduced travel as higher energy prices strain India's foreign exchange reserves and threaten to widen the current account deficit for a third straight year.

Some state governments have already instructed departments to limit travel, avoid physical meetings and operate with reduced office staffing.
