'One debate, one Bill a day' formula for peace in Rajya Sabha

'One debate, one Bill a day' formula for peace in Rajya Sabha
New Delhi: Amid sharp differences between the government and the opposition that have led to several wasted sessions, a peace formula was proposed on Tuesday to keep Rajya Sabha in order.

Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari today asked parties to consider his formula - one debate and one Bill each day, and no adjournment till both are discussed in the House.

44 Bills have been lined up for this short monsoon session, which has only 16 working days, a plan that is being seen as 'ambitious' given past history.

On Tuesday, the second day of the session, the killing of five Indian soldiers by Pakistanis led to many disruptions in Parliament. Day 1 had been disrupted by anti-Telangana protests by Congress MPs.

The previous budget session of Parliament was among the least productive on record, with regular disruptions over the railway cash for post scandal and the coal allocation scam.

Since 2004, when the UPA came to power, Parliament is yet to pass 56 Bills. This time, the Food Security Bill has been tipped as 'most important' by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Attempts at brokering peace came on a day more differences emerged between the government and the BJP on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), signaling more roadblocks for the key economic reform.
