Bangalore:
When Tamil Nadu Chief Minister arrived in Bangalore to resume her deposition before a special court in a case of alleged corruption against her, it was a deja vu moment for the city.
A 25-car convoy led Jayalalithaa to court from the old airport, a fleet of policemen were pressed into service from dawn to dusk on the road that leads to this special court and a tight security blanket was thrown around the jail. Jayalalithaa was accused No 1 in the Rs 66-crore disproportionate assets case.
The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was accompanied by her close friend Sasikala Natarajan and Jayalalithaa's adopted son V Sudhakaran, the other accused in the 15-year-old case.
During her third appearance in court today, she answered 600 questions.
A hearing was held on November 8 too, but Ms Jayalalithaa had appealed in the Supreme Court that she be excused from the hearing; she said she did not want to inconvenience the people of Bangalore and so had sought permission to answer questions in writing. But the top court had turned down her appeal not to appear in person but said she should be given a date of her choice.
Jayalalithaa's first date with this court on October 20 clashed with the launch of the much-awaited Metro in Bangalore. Several hundreds of policemen were brought in for bandobust duty. CCTVs were put up on this sanitised route.
The case goes back to the period 1991-1996, when she as Chief Minister is alleged to have amassed wealth disproportionate to her known sources of income.
"Jayalalithaa has to answer more questions pertaining to the case. We hope it will be over tomorrow," said Jayalalithaa's lawyer, BN Kumar.
The AIADMK chief will appear before court on Wednesday to answer the remaining 190 questions.
The case was transferred to a Bangalore court for free and fair trial. Jayalalithaa will have to, in all likelihood, make more such appearances. But will the court decide to treat her as just another accused and have her appear physically each time, or will it agree to Jayalalithaa who has requested for appearance through video conference keeping in mind the logistical inconvenience?
