Jammu And Kashmir Gets Its Own Mobile TV Station

A Jammu and Kashmir resident launched valley's first mobile television station, 'Asian News Network'

Srinagar: Hit by unrest for the last six months, Jammu and Kashmir is now home to an enterprise that hopes to present a new side of life in the valley.

A 32-year-old resident of Kashmir, Tariq Bhat, has launched the valley's first 'mobile television station'. Called 'Asian News Network', the channel was launched two months ago when violence and protests in the state following the killing of terrorist Burhan Wani was at its height. Distributed as a smartphone app, it already has over 79,000 downloads till now, the developers claim.

"The fact that it is portable is its biggest merit. It is great help that I can watch a Kashmiri TV channel anywhere I go," said Armaan, a viewer.

The multi-lingual TV station predominantly runs programmes in the Kashmiri language including news, current affairs and entertainment shows showcasing aspirations and achievements of the young Kashmiris.

The aim behind setting up this TV station, says Mr Bhat, "is to remove labelling Kashmiri youth as stone pelters and people who don't have the worth to do something better".

"I want to prove these allegations wrong and show that Kashmiris are innovative and can do anything," he said.

A mass communication post graduate, Mr Bhat had earlier also started an online radio app 'City FM JK'.
