Srinagar:

Amid protests and ongoing security restrictions, the Jammu and Kashmir government has announced closure of schools and colleges till the end of this week.

After the death of Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, protests erupted in Kashmir valley on Sunday. In view of the law and order situation, the government decided to close educational institutions for two days.

But as the security situation remains dicey amid protests and restrictions, the government today announced closure of schools and colleges till March 7.

All schools and colleges of Kashmir division will remain closed till March 7, state Education Minister Sakina Itoo said in a post on X.

While no major incident of violence was reported today amid protests at some places, Monday saw clashes and intense stone pelting by angry protesters at several places. At least 12 people including five policemen were injured.

After yesterday's violence and stone-throwing, the police issued a strong warning that disruption of public order is unacceptable and tough action will be taken against those who throw stones.

Srinagar's Lal Chowk has been sealed off by the police for the last three days. On Sunday, Lal Chowk was a major site of protests as thousands gathered after the killing of Khamenei. Since then, all entry and exit routes of the city centre have been closed with tin sheets and concertina wire.

Mobile internet service has been curtailed in Kashmir valley. According to a home department order, curbs on the internet will remain enforced till 8 pm tomorrow. It can be further extended based on the assessment of the situation.
