Headley twist to delay 26/11 trial?

Headley twist to delay 26/11 trial?
Mumbai: As each day passes new information seems to be emerging on how David Headley may indeed be the missing link in the 26/11 terror conspiracy.

The emergence of David Headley now threatens to prolong the trial of Ajmal Kasab - the reasons are numerous.

Headley is reported to have stayed at two of the 26/11 targets - the Taj and the Trident - both in 2007. He also stayed at Hotel Outram, not to far from the CST station, one of the other targets of the 26/11 attack.

Also the FBI has seized a booklet from Headley on how to learn Jewish leading to speculation that he may have also visited Nariman House, another 26/11 target.

Another key point Tahawwur Hussain Rana, Headley's alleged boss, was in Mumbai less than a week before the terror attacks.

Points that those defending Kasab's co-accused Fahim Ansari and Sabauddin Ahmed plan to pick up in court.

  • The duo have been named as the men who surveyed the targets
  • The maps created by them have already been produced in court
"We are going to file a discharge application in court claiming that Fahim and Sabauddin are innocent and that Headley was the one who conducted the survey," said Abbas Naqvi, Fahim Ansari's lawyer.

Given the information that has been surfacing since the arrest of David Headley and Tahawwur Rana, the prosecution and the Mumbai Police are maintaining a stoic silence, off camera insisting that Headley will not impact their case.

However, the sign on the wall is clear with the defence set to raise the issue in court, they will have to work harder to convince the court that Fahim and Sabauddin, the alleged local handlers, were the ones who provided Kasab and company their local support.
