Farmers Protest in Delhi: police has increased vigilance to avoid a January 26-like violence

New Delhi: Farmers protesting against three Central farm laws since last November protested at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar. The agitation, including a Kisan Sansad, is being held in groups of some 200 while Parliament is in session, they said.

Here are the ten key thing you must know about the agitation:

  1. Over 200 farmers today protested at Jantar Mantar against three Central farm laws. They arrived in buses and SUVs from the Singhu border point, escorted by the police.

  2. Many MPs "visited the Kisan Sansad" they had organised, though they didn't take the stage or make any address, said a Sanyukt Kisan Morcha statement.

  3. Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait told NDTV: "Eight months ago, they didn't even consider us farmers. The government takes part in only conditional talks."

  4. The Delhi government and police allowed farmers to protest till August 9 between 11am and 5pm. Disaster management rules were tweaked for this. Covid protocol to be followed.

  5. In the morning, after initial resistance, the police took the farmers inside a resort to count their numbers. Only 206 are allowed each day as per conditions.

  6. The protesters followed Parliamentary norms, with a speaker, a deputy speaker, a tea break etc. "We will show how to hold Parliament," political activist Yogendra Yadav said.

  7. Meanwhile, Parliament was adjourned several times over, among other things, the farm laws. Some Congress MPs said refused to let the House function until the matter was solved. They protested outside Parliament. The Shiromani Akali Dal also sought a debate.

  8. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said the new farm laws are beneficial. Laws can be discussed "point-wise" if farmers express the issues, he said.

  9. The police tightened security to avoiding a repeat of the January 26 violence. They have asked Delhi Metro to maintain extra vigil at seven stations and close them if needed.

  10. Traffic movement was hit on some roads.
