Srinagar: The Election Commission has issued a notice to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for violating the model code of conduct during by-elections in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.

The PDP chief has been asked to explain her position within two days for allegedly misusing official machinery while filing her nomination papers.

Ms Mufti, contesting from Anantnag constituency, courted controversy on Wednesday after she drove inside the election office with the state and national flag on her official cars - a violation of the Election Commission's code of conduct.

The Opposition National Conference had filed a complaint with the Election Commission accusing Ms Mufti of misusing official machinery while filing her nomination papers.

Official sources say that the Election Commission has taken a serious note of the poll code violation.

At least two ministers accompanying her were also using official cars with flags inside the election office premises.

Ms Mufti took over as the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir two months ago and has to be elected as a member of the state legislature within the mandatory 6 month period after she sworn in.

She has to be elected a legislator to continue as chief minister.
