"I feel very sad as I am unable to play because of my injury. When I see other children playing, I long to join them. But the terrorists broke my leg in such a way that I cannot play.''
Ten-year-old Devika remembers what happened on 26/11 as if it were yesterday. And she relives it often in court. The youngest witness in the 26/11 case is still getting used to her crutches.
She was with her father, Natwarlal, waiting at the Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) for a train to Pune, when two terrorists opened fire at the station. Bullets shattered Devika's leg. One of the two terrorists would later be caught and identified as Ajmal Kasab.
In June, Devika and her father testified against Kasab in court and identified him. Natwarlal says this is the only way that he can avenge what his daughter has gone through. "I get angry when I recall that day, but I refuse to get scared. We will stand up and fight if necessary," he promises.
Devika has her own plans for how to get even. ''I want to grow up and join the police,'' she says, smiling at the idea of protecting others from the sort of nightmare that she has learnt to live with.
