New Delhi:

India's total tally of COVID-19 cases surged to 3,12,57,720 with 41,383 new infections being reported in a day, while the recoveries have crossed 3.04 crore, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

The death count increased to 4,18,987 with 507 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

Meanwhile, the prevalence of the highly transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19 among specimens sequenced over the past four weeks exceeded 75 per cent in many countries worldwide, including India, China, Russia, Israel and the UK, the WHO has said.

In the COVID-19 Weekly Epidemiological Update published July 20, the World Health Organisation said that despite efforts to extend vaccination coverage, many countries across all six WHO regions continue to experience surges in coronavirus cases.

Over the past week, the highest numbers of new cases were reported from Indonesia (350,273 new cases; a 44 per cent increase), the UK (296,447 new cases; 41 per cent increase), Brazil (287,610 new cases; 14 per cent decrease), India (268,843 new cases; 8 per cent decrease) and the US (216,433 new cases; 68 per cent increase).

COVID-19 News: 45,374 Black Fungus Cases, 4,332 Deaths In India So Far: Centre
As many as 45,374 cases of Mucormycosis or "Black Fungus" have been reported in the country so far, said the Union Health Ministry on Thursday, according to news agency ANI. It said 4,332 Black Fungus patients have died due to the disease across the country.

MoS Health, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, "Mucormycosis or Black Fungus, although not a new disease, was not a notifiable disease till May 2021 when the health ministry requested states to declare it a notifiable disease under Epidemic Disease Act, 1897 to get an objective assessment of Mucormycosis in the community."

The minister also said that "Mucormycosis cases in the country for the last two months is showing a declining trend."

COVID-19 India News: Odisha Logs 1,948 New Cases, 67 Fresh Deaths
Odisha's COVID-19 tally rose to 9,61,934 on Thursday as 1,948 more people tested positive for the infection, while 67 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death count to 5,308, a health official said, according to news agency PTI. While 1,120 new cases were reported in quarantine centres, the remaining 828 infections were detected during contact tracing, he said.

Odisha now has 19,623 active cases, while 9,36,950 people have recovered from the disease so far, including 1,943 on Wednesday. Fifty-three other patients have died due to comorbidities thus far. Odisha's daily test positivity rate (TPR) stands at 2.45% as 79,372 samples were tested for COVID-19, taking the cumulative tests to over 1.53 crore. The state's cumulative positivity rate stood at 6.26%.

The state has thus far administered over 1.47 crore doses, including 1.21 lakh on Wednesday. As many as 8,699 pregnant women have been inoculated to date. The vaccination drive is underway at 1,128 centres across the state on Thursday, he added.

Jharkhand reported 46 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, which pushed the tally to 3,46,824, a health department bulletin said on Thursday. The COVID-19 death toll remained at 5,122 as no new fatality due to the contagion was reported in the last 24 hours, it said. Covid Delta Variant To Dominate Within Months: WHO

The highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 is expected to become the dominant strain of the virus over the coming months, the World Health Organization said Wednesday. French cinemas, museums and sports venues began asking visitors Wednesday to furnish proof of Covid-19 vaccination or a negative test as the country, which is in the throes of a fourth wave of infections, rolled out a controversial vaccine passport system. The so-called "health pass" is required for all events or places with more than 50 people before being extended to restaurants, cafes and shopping centres in August.

Prime Minister Jean Castex defended the policy, noting that nearly all new infections are in people who have not been immunised.

The number of new infections over 24 hours shot up to 21,000 on Wednesday, the highest level since early May.
