India's coronavirus case count has crossed the 9 lakh-mark as 28,498 new cases and 553 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. While 23,727 people have died of the infection, over 5.71 lakh people have recovered, government data this morning showed.

Maharashtra recorded 6,497 new cases of COVID-19 and 193 deaths on Monday, pushing the state's total cases to 2,60,924. A comprehensive, two-phase lockdown has started in Pune from Monday midnight and will continue till July 23. This is yet another attempt to break the chain of the coronavirus infections. On Monday, Pune City limits reported 560 cases, taking total cases in the city to 29,600.

The Centre said that coordinated steps taken by it along with state governments have contributed to a "gradual surge" in the recovery of patients. It also said that there are 30 states and union territories (UTs) that have a fatality rate lower than the national average of 2.64 per cent.

10 deaths, 1,524 new COVID-19 cases in Telangana

COVID-19 cases continued to rise sharply in Telangana on Tuesday, with as many as 1,524 new cases and 10 deaths being reported, taking the tally to 37,745 and deaths to 375.

Out of the 1,524 fresh cases, 815 were reported from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), followed by Ranga Reddy and Medchal districts with 240 and 97 cases respectively.

A government bulletin said 24,840 people have been discharged so far, while 12,531 were under treatment.

Over 11,000 beds available for COVID-19 patients in Delhi hospitals: State government

Delhi hospitals have over 11,000 beds available for coronavirus patients, according to the city government''s health bulletin issued on Tuesday. 

According to the bulletin, Delhi has a total of 15,300 beds and out of these 11,106 are lying vacant. In view of the COVID-19 situation in the national capital, the Delhi government has also made arrangement of beds in hotels and banquet halls which are linked to hospitals.

Goa registers record rise of 170 cases; 67 recover

Goa reported 170 new COVID-19 cases - its highest-ever single-day spike - taking the tally to 2,753 on Tuesday, while one more patient succumbed to the infection, the state health department said.

Also, 67 people were discharged on Tuesday following recovery, leaving the state with 1,128 active cases, a health department bulletin said. The state reported its highest-ever spike of COVID-19 cases with 170 people testing positive for the infection, taking the tally to 2,753, it said.

COVID-19: Madhya Pradesh Home Department issues order to prohibit religious programmes

Madhya Pradesh Home Department on Tuesday issued an order, instructing all district collectors to ensure that no religious programmes are organised at public places in the view of coronavirus outbreak.

"Not more than 5 people should gather at a religious place at a time," read the order.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there are 18,207 coronavirus cases in Madhya Pradesh including 4,336 active cases and 663 deaths.

859 new cases reported in Assam, tally crosses 18,000-mark

Six COVID-19 patients died and 859 new cases were reported on Tuesday with the infection tally crossing the 18,000-mark in Assam, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The six fatalities have been ascertained as due to COVID-19 by the Death Audit Board. The current novel coronavirus death toll in the state stands at 46.

The board is yet to ascertain whether the five fatalities, which were reported on Monday, had the "underlying cause of death" as COVID-19.

The total positive cases in the state reached 18,666 with 859 new patients and out of these 627 are from Guwahati city, Mr Sarma said. The minister tweeted,"859 new COVID-19 patients in Assam, 627 in Guwahati alone. Take care and precautions."

Nashik's COVID-19 count now 7,444, death toll 349

The number of COVID-19 cases in Nashik district touched 7,444 as 185 people were detected with the infection on Tuesday, while the toll rose to 349 as the samples of eight people who died over the past few days tested positive during the day, an official said.

Coronavirus: 22 States Doing More Than 140 Tests Per Million, Says Centre
22 states are doing more than 140 COVID-19 tests per day per million in line with the testing guidance note by the WHO, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

"While defining the meaning comprehensive in the same document, they say if you are testing 140 people per day per 10 lakh people, that would be indicative of comprehensive," the centre said at a press briefing today.

"There are 22 states performing more than 140 COVID-19 tests per day per million in line with comprehensive testing guidance note by the WHO," an official said.

Coronavirus news: Odisha to launch plasma therapy in 3 COVID hospitals from Wednesday

The Odisha government on Tuesday decided to start plasma therapy to treat critically ill patients in three dedicated COVID-19 hospitals in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, officials said.

The decision was taken at a review meeting presided by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The plasma therapy will be introduced in SUM Hospital and KIIMs hospitals in Bhubaneswar and Ashiwini Hospital in Cuttack, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: ITBP's COVID-19 positive personnel to help in Delhi's largest corona centre
About a dozen coronavirus affected Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and some other CAPFs personnel have been admitted to the Delhi's largest COVID care centre so that they can get cured and also help in better management of patient health services at the sprawling complex, officials said on Tuesday.

The ITBP, that runs the centre, also publicised telephone helpline numbers and an email id that can be used by coronavirus infected people to get admission at the newly created Sardar Patel centre located at the Radha Soami Beas campus in south Delhi's Chhattarpur area, PTI reported.

India is considered as the "pharmacy of the world". About 60 per cent of the drugs uitilised in the United States of America are of Indian origin. So, these are generic drugs produced in India where the country has established itself over the years. This is possibly well known to many people in the world, said (Prof) Dr Balram Bhargava, Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Highlighting an important fact that is not known about Indian vaccines and drugs, Dr Bhargava said --i.e. 60 per cent of the vaccines (like Rubella, measles, polio) supplied in the world, whether it be Africa, Europe, South East Asia or anywhere are of Indian origin, ANI reported.

Coronavirus news: Ludhiana Police to keep tab if international passengers arriving in Punjab follow mandatory 14-day quarantine

Under the new guidelines issued by the Punjab government amid the COVID-19 pandemic, international passengers arriving in the state will have to stay quarantined for 14 days.

Coronavirus news: 26 fresh COVID-19 cases reported in Tripura, total 2,094

Twenty-six more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura, taking the total number of coronavirus cases in the state to 2,094, officials said on Tuesday.

A total of 1,475 patients have recovered from the disease so far, reducing the number of active cases to 603, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: 51 new COVID-19 cases in Nagaland, tally rises to 896
Nagaland on Tuesday reported 51 new COVID-19 cases, taking the state's tally to 896, Health and Family Welfare Minister S Pangnyu Phom said.

Of the 51 new cases, 24 were reported from Kohima, 20 from Peren, three in Dimapur, two in Longleng and one each in Mokokchung and Zunheboto districts, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: Nepal's coronavirus cases cross 17,000-mark
Nepal's coronavirus tally crossed the 17,000-mark on Tuesday with the detection of 116 new cases in the last 24 hours, the health ministry said.

The virus has so far claimed 38 lives in the country.

"With the detection of the 116 new cases, the total COVID-19 tally now stands at 17,061," health ministry spokesperson Jageshwo Gautam told reporters.

While 6,695 patients are currently undergoing treatment in various health facilities across the country, 10,328 have recovered, PTI reported.

About 80 workers associated with the Metro Rail work have been found infected with the coronavirus, a Bangalore Metrol Rail Corporation Limited official said on Tuesday.

"About 80 workers working at the Reach-6 underground work tested positive for coronavirus last week," BMRCL chief public relations officer BL Yashwanth Chavan told PTI.

Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina, who had visited slain colleague Waseem Bari's residence along with several leaders in Bandipora, on Tuesday said he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Mr Raina said he visited north Kashmir's Bandipora area to take part in last rites of former BJP district president Waseem Bari, his father and brother, who were killed by terrorists last week outside their home.

Coronavirus news: Highest single-day spike of 1,432 COVID-19 cases in Bihar, total count 18,853

Bihar recorded the worst single-day spike of 1,432 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, which pushed the total tally in the state to 18,853, the health department said.

Of the 1,432 cases, Patna reported the maximum number of patients at 162, followed by East Champaran at 124, Begusarai at 114, Nalanda at 107, Nawada at 92, Bhagalpur at 61, West Champaran at 58, Siwan at 55 and Muzaffarpur at 54, PTI reported.

Coronavirus news: Parents in Hyderabad protest against school fees amidst pandemic
Parents of school children in Hyderabad staged a protest in front of St Andrews School in Telangana's Bowenpally against the school fees collected by the management as they felt it is unreasonable on the school's part to collect fees amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the parents, they were against the fees as the schools were closed and children have only attended classes online. Parents also claimed that the school management falsely stated that they were abiding by government orders.

Speaking to ANI over the phone, C. Anjaiah, Inspector of Police of the Bowenpally Police said, "Parents have gathered here to discuss a reduction in school fees."

More Than 80 workers test COVID-19 positive in Bengaluru

More than 80 Namma Metro workers have tested positive for COVID-19 in Bengaluru, said Yashwanth Chauhan BL, public relations officer of Namma Metro.

"All safety and treatment protocols would be followed at the camps," he added.

These workers were staying in a camp near Nagavara-Gottigere lane, reach-6 of phase two. More than 200 contract workers of Larsen and Toubro who had come from different states have been tested after a labourer complained of fever.

UK COVID-19 death count nears 56,000 including suspected cases: Report

The United Kingdom's COVID-19 death count has hit 55,873, including suspected cases, according to a Reuters tally of official data sources that underline the country's status as one of the worst hit in the world.

The Reuters tally comprises fatalities where COVID-19 was mentioned on death certificates in England, Wales and Northern Ireland up to July 3, and up to July 5. It also includes more recent hospital deaths.

The government's daily count, which only records deaths following positive coronavirus tests, stands at 44,830.

Those coming to Punjab for less than 72 hours are now exempt from the mandatory home quarantine, and only need to submit a formal undertaking at the border check post, the Punjab Chief Minister's Office said.

During this period, the visitors will commit to monitoring their health and maintaining social distance, and also interact with the assigned surveillance team in case they have any symptoms consistent with COVID-19, it said.

Hong Kong to impose most severe social distancing restrictions amid pandemic

Hong Kong will impose strict new social distancing measures from midnight Tuesday, the most stringent since the coronavirus broke out, as authorities warn the risk of a large-scale outbreak is extremely high.

The measures dictate that face masks will be mandatory for people using public transport and restaurants will no longer provide dine in services and only offer takeaway after 6 pm. Both are new rules that were not implemented during the city's first and second coronavirus waves earlier this year. Goa asks private hospitals to reserve 20% beds for COVID-19 patients

The Goa government has made it compulsory for all private hospitals in the state to reserve 20 per cent of their total beds for COVID-19 patients.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to review the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the coastal state. Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane also attended the meeting.

"If any private hospital does not comply with the order, its license to operate could be suspended or cancelled," says state health services director.

Indore reports 51 fresh COVID-19 cases

Indore on Monday reported 51 new COVID-19 cases taking the total number of cases in the district to 5,403, said Office of Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in a bulletin.

As per the bulletin, a total of 11 persons were discharged on Monday taking the total number of recovered/discharged patients to 4,028.

There are 1,102 active cases in the district, and 4,792 people are under institutional quarantine.

The death toll touched 273 after 4 deaths were reported on Monday including 3 deaths which the district health department termed as ''reconciliation" from the month of April.

Rail Bhawan shut for 2 days for sanitisation after some officials test COVID-19 positive

The Rail Bhawan, headquarters of the Indian Railways will remain shut for two days from July 14 to carry out intensive sanitisation after some officials were found COVID-19 positive in the premises, according to an order issued on Monday.

In a circular, the Railway Board said, "Some Officials of Railway Board have tested COVID-positive during the Special Rapid Antigen Testing Camp organized at Rail Bhawan on July 9, 10 and July 13. Accordingly, it has been decided to close all Offices at Rail Bhawan on July 14 and 15 to carry out intensive sanitization of rooms and common areas."

During this period, all officers, staff would work from home and are to be available at all times on the phone and other electronic means of communication, the board said.

Nearly 60,000 New Virus Cases In US In 24 Hours: Report

The United States on Monday confirmed 59,222 new coronavirus cases in the previous 24 hours, Johns Hopkins University reported in its real-time tally.

That put the total number of cases in the US, the nation hardest-hit by the global pandemic, at more than 3.36 million, the Baltimore-based university said at 8:30 pm (0030 GMT Tuesday).

Another 411 deaths were reported, bringing that total toll to 135,582.

The country has seen a resurgence of cases in the so-called Sun Belt, stretching across the south from Florida to California.

Odisha's COVID-19 recovery rate at 64-65 pc: Chief Secy Asit Tripathy

The recovery rate of COVID-19 patients in Odisha is around 64-65 per cent while the fatality rate is at 0.48 per cent, which is among the lowest in the country, said state Chief Secretary Asit Tripathy on Monday.

"At present, the recovery rate of COVID-19 patients in Odisha is around 64-65 per cent and the fatality rate is among the lowest in the country at 0.48 per cent," said Mr Tripathy.

"Odisha has a robust COVID-19 management system and many layers of monitoring systems in the state, but as the pandemic situation is evolving, we need time to time policy according to the situation and strengthen our resources," he added.

COVID-19 deaths in West Bengal reaches 956; 1,435 fresh cases reported

Twenty-four more people died due to COVID-19 in West Bengal, taking the total number of such fatalities in the state to 956, the health department said on Monday.

According to the department, 1,435 fresh COVID-19 cases were reported from different districts of the state in the last 24 hours, pushing the infection tally to 31,448.

The number of active cases currently stands at 11,279.

Kerala Maintains Good Performance To Contain COVID-19 Spread: Pinarayi Vijayan

Kerala has maintained good performance to contain the spread of COVID-19 outbreak, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday.

In a daily briefing, the Chief Minister gave the details about four indicators where the state has performed well, that is, in mortality rate, disease spread, testing and recovery.

"Kerala presently has a case fatality rate (deaths per 100 positive cases) of 0.39 per cent as compared to the national average of 2.67 per cent, whereas the world average stands at 4.38 per cent. The neighbouring states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have much higher case fatality rates. The number of deaths per million in Kerala is 0.9 as against the national figure of 17," the Chief Minister said.
