Daily Coronavirus Cases In India Closing In On 10,000-Mark: 10 Points

New Delhi: Coronavirus cases in India crossed 2.66 lakh cases today after a record number of 9,987 cases were reported in 24 hours, even as the government allowed a number of relaxations from Monday after over two months of lockdown. This is the biggest single-day jump in cases as the country recorded over 9,000 cases for the seventh consecutive day. The country is closing in on 10,000 cases per day.

Here are the Top 10 updates on the coronavirus pandemic:

  1. The total number of deaths due to the virus now stands at 7,466, government data shows. The total number of cases is 2,66,598 out of which 1,29,215 have recovered. 266 people died in the last 24 hours due to the deadly disease.

  2. Maharashtra remains the worst-hit state in the country - the state has even surpassed China's tally with over 88,000 cases. The state also has the highest number of deaths at 3,169 and its capital Mumbai is one of the worst-hit cities in the country.

  3. Tamil Nadu and Delhi, which are also registering a steady spike in cases, are the second and third worst-hit in India. Tamil Nadu has 33,229 cases while Delhi has close to 30,000 cases.

  4. Delhi has seen a decline in number of tests done daily as only 3,700 samples were tested on Monday. Out of this, 1,007 tested positive for the virus, making the positive rate 27.2 per cent. On Monday, the positive rate across the country was 9.2 per cent.

Of the 266 new deaths reported till Tuesday morning, 109 were in Maharashtra, 62 in Delhi, 31 in Gujarat, 17 in Tamil Nadu, 11 in Haryana, nine in West Bengal, eight in Uttar Pradesh, six in Rajasthan, four in Jammu and Kashmir, three in Karnataka, two each in Madhya Pradesh and Punjab and one each in Bihar and Kerala.

  7. India's recovery rate - the number of patients who have fought the disease successfully - is currently at 48.46 per cent.

  8. For the past few days, India has seen a surge in cases even as from Monday places of worship, malls and restaurants reopened under "Unlock 1" - the first of the three-phase plan for reopening of prohibited activities in non-containment zones with strict rules. Reopening of movie theatres and large gatherings will not be allowed as of yet.

  9. India is the fifth worst-hit nation by the COVID-19 pandemic after the US, Brazil, Russia and the UK. The country surpassed Spain a few days back.

  10. The World Health Organization said that the coronavirus pandemic situation was worsening around the globe, as it warned against complacency. The novel coronavirus has killed more than 4,03,000 people out of at least seven million infected since the outbreak emerged in China last December.
