Congress to discuss Food Security Bill today

Congress to discuss Food Security Bill today
New Delhi: A week after the UPA Government postponed the Food Security ordinance, the Congress Core Group has convened a meeting on Wednesday to take a political call on the issue.

Sources say Parliamentary Affairs minister Kamal Nath and Food Minister K V Thomas have been asked to be present at the meeting.

Kamal Nath is expected to brief the leadership about his informal discussions with political parties on the need for a special session.

Last Thursday, UPA was all set to promulgate an ordinance to make food security a legal right. But at the Cabinet, the Prime Minister said that one more attempt will be made to convince the Opposition to get the bill, aimed to provide subsidised food to nearly 70% of India's population, passed in Parliament. The government will try to convene a special session of Parliament instead to clear the Rs. 1.3 lakh crore welfare reform.

However, more than Opposition, the Samajwadi party, whose support is crucial to the stability of UPA, is strongly opposed to the bill.
