CBI Registers Murder Case in Killing of 2 Dalit Children Near Delhi

Two-and-a-half year old Vaibhav and 11-months-old Divya were burnt alive in the fire.

Faridabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case of murder against 11 people in connection with the killing of two children of a Dalit family, who were burnt alive after their house was set on fire in Sunped village in Haryana, 40 kilometers from Delhi on October 20.

CBI sources said that as per the laid down procedure, the agency has taken over the investigation in the First Information Report or FIR registered by the local police which had named 11 persons in the case.

A team of agency officials reached the crime scene today and collected forensic evidence. The team headed by a DIG-level officer is in the process of understanding the circumstances of the incident.

During the early hours of October 20, some upper caste persons allegedly poured petrol from the windows and set the house of Jitender, a Dalit, on fire. The 31-year-old suffered injuries while trying to save his two-and-a-half-year old son Vaibhav and 11-month-old daughter Divya. The children were burnt alive.

Jitender's wife Rekha, 28, had also suffered serious burn injuries. She is still in a critical condition in Safdarjang Hospital in Delhi.

The local police has registered a case against Sunped resident Balwant and his son Dharm Singh besides nine others under Indian Penal Code or IPC sections 302 (murder), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 148 (Rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object).

Others named in the FIR include Jagat, Edal, Naunihal, Joginder, Sooraj, Akash, Aman, Sanjay, and Desh Raj of the same village.

The Haryana government had ordered a CBI probe after the incident sparked nationwide protests.

An Special investigation Team or SIT has also been constituted by the district administration under District Commissioner of Police PC Pawar.
