Assassination attempt at football match in Orissa

Orissa: Sudam Marandi has survived what seems to be an assassination attempt by Naxals in Orissa.  Marandi, a former MP, is a senior leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

Marandi was watching a football tournament on Tuesday when a group of 15 suspected Naxals opened fire. Bullets shot across the crowd watching the match at Chandua village, barely 30 kilometres from Baripada, district headquarters of Mayurbhanj district. Marandi, who had been invited to the match, esacaped without injuries. But three persons- a gram rakshi, an assistant police sub-inspector and Marandi's assistant were killed.

Top police officers have so far not confirmed that it was a Maoist attack. But local sources point out that Chandua village is close to the West Bengal border, and that Naxals from Bengal could be responsible for the assassination attempt.
