Abdullah announces candidature from Srinagar

Srinagar:

National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Monday decided to jump into the fray for the prestigious Srinagar Lok Sabha seat, for which the party has already announced the candidature of Salman Sagar, Mayor of Srinagar.

However, Abdullah said he has not taken a final decision whether to ultimately contest the elections.

"Things will be clear in a few days" at the time of withdrawal of nomination, he said.

The polling for Srinagar is scheduled for May 7.

Salman Sagar is the son of powerful party leader Ali Mohammed Sagar.

Asked why Sagar will file the nomination paper when he (Abdullah) is contesting, Abdullah said he is in a dilemma whether to ultimately contest or not.

Abdullah, who is the President of the party, told reporters that he had to take the decision "under pressure from his party leaders."

"My life will end fighting elections....this (contesting elections) keeps me young and fit," said Abdullah when asked why he was jumping in every political battle - state assembly, Rajya Sabha and now Lok Sabha.
